What is CrossFit?

CrossFit is a core strength and conditioning program designed to elicit as broad an adaptational response as possible.  The program delivers a fitness that is, by design, broad, general, and inclusive.  It is not a specialized fitness program, but instead a deliberate attempt to optimize physical competence in each of the ten recognized fitness domains. They are Cardiovascular and Respiratory endurance, Stamina, Strength, Flexibility, Power, Speed, Coordination, Agility, Balance, and Accuracy.  Our goal is to enhance an individual’s competency at all physical tasks.  we achieve this by adhering to the principles of functionality, variance, and intensity.

Functional Movement

Designing a fitness program may be a daunting task with so many exercises to choose from; however, the key to separating the good from the bad is choosing only those movements that are going to have the greatest impact on your fitness.  Fortunately, there’s an easy way to eliminate the majority of conventional gym type exercises from your routine while maximizing the effectiveness of those that you choose. Since single joint movements (think Bicep Curls & Chest Flies) and virtually all machine-based exercises don’t exist in daily routines outside of the gym, they provide no benefit in one’s everyday life.  However, when functional movements in exercise mimic real life activity (squatting is standing from a seated position, dead-lifting is picking up any object off the ground), they transfer over into one’s daily life activities.  Thus, CrossFit ensures that you are not wasting your time at the gym because the workouts exclusively deal with functional movements.

Constantly Varied

The breadth of your fitness will match the breadth of your fitness programming.  Simply put, if your fitness program consists solely of running, you will only be good at running. The best fitness routine is the one you abandon for a new one. At CrossFit, our goal is to train for all known and unknowable tasks.  The only way to train for the unknown effectively is to constantly vary the programming.  We vary everything, including but not limited to the length of the workout, order of the movements, movements chosen, amount of weight lifted, and number of repetitions.  It’s not likely that you’ll do the same workout twice, unless for the purpose of measuring progress.

High Intensity

In order to ensure that you will continually see progress with your fitness program, you need to be working out at a sufficient intensity in order to overload your system; in other words, exercise should never be comfortable.  Since intensity is directly proportional to results, and unfortunately also discomfort, CrossFit workouts, while cathartic, are performed at relatively high intensity in order to continually produce results.  Crossfit is unique in that the workouts are universally scalable, making high intensity workouts accessible to any committed individual regardless of fitness level, experience, or age.  Individual results vary, and are dependent on things like one’s mental state, sleep, and nutrition  Our goal for you is to be working as hard as you can, every time you work out.  By performing functional movements, at high intensity, in as many combinations as the imagination allows, strive to exceed your potential and be CrossFit.
